Medicare:  You’ve Got to be Kidding Me!

For most people reaching age 65, Medicare is quite a shock. They thought Medicare was free and that they would save a lot of money on health insurance when they retired.

Unfortunately, that is far from reality. Medicare is complicated—to start, there are 4 parts to enroll in.

The timing is tricky—many people don’t need to enroll around their 65th birthday, but some do.

The costs are increasing dramatically—there are monthly premiums, unexpected prescription drug costs, and significant out-of-pocket expenses.

But Medicare is the only game in town once you are 65 or older AND no longer receiving health insurance from a large employer. So, learning how to play this part of the retirement game successfully is critically important.

The posts in this Medicare section will help you understand the various parts of Medicare and how it works. Importantly, this is also where you’ll find the annual updates to Part B premiums and the rules and changes for Part D plans.

I encourage you to come back often. Medicare laws, rules, and regulations are continually changing. This information will help you keep up to date.

They’ve got their … [Read more...] about Dental Plans and Medicare. Do You Even Need a Dental Plan?

COBRA Coverage after Age 65 – It Doesn’t Really Work

One of the most misunderstood aspects of working after age 65 is how long you can stay on COBRA. The short answer is: Not. At. All. Practically speaking, COBRA coverage after age 65 does not provide you with health insurance. Even if your HR folks tell you COBRA coverage will be available. Or if your employer offers to pay the monthly premium as part of your exit package. … [Read more...] about COBRA Coverage after Age 65 – It Doesn’t Really Work

Medicare Part D Open Enrollment Period is Here

Time to Reshop Your Part D Plan for 2026 I left Dunkin' Donuts this morning with a medium hot coffee on a blustery fall day. Two construction workers walked behind me, laughing. One of them said that when he retires, he plans to spend every morning sitting in Dunkin's. The other guy chimed in, saying he’ll do the same. He can’t wait to drink coffee and eat donuts every day. … [Read more...] about Medicare Part D Open Enrollment Period is Here

What’s Cookin’?

If your kitchen is anything like mine, it’s the place everyone gathers to talk about their day, share special moments, and ask important questions. And to see what’s cooking.

There’s a strong connection between preparing meals and planning retirement. Both need certain ingredients, recipes to follow, and timing that’s just right.

My motto to live by: "If you can make a lasagna, you can create a retirement plan."
