How Boomers Are Reshaping and Redefining "Retirement"

Marcia's Retirement Kitchen

What’s cookin’ in Marcia’s retirement kitchen?

Cooking and baking are an integral part of my family life.  There is nothing more wonderful than having family and friends sit around the kitchen table, enjoying a good, homemade meal and sharing the latest comings and goings of their lives.  There is a lot of laughter and second helpings.

Now that my husband and I are more than “halfway to 100” and the girls are on their way to building their own lives, the times we get together and have these family dinners are even more special.

For me, there is a deep connection between food and retirement – from planning, shopping and preparing to seeing the results of a day’s creativity on the table.  It takes a long time to become a good cook…and a long time to invest and manage and tweak plans for a successful retirement.  The kitchen table just seems to be the best place for planning both dinners and our future.

In the posts below, I share some of my favorite recipes for dinners and dessert, along with some recipes for retirement success.

Don’t be shy.  Share some of your recipes and stories and how you are cookin’ up your plan for retirement!

July is National Ice Cream Month!

List of ice cream costs for national ice cream month

Here we are in July already.  2021 is halfway over.  And, happily, it’s National Ice Cream Month!  I do love ice cream on a hot summer day.  And, boy has it been hot out there this summer.  And, a funny thing has happened to ice cream.  The average cost of a half-gallon of ice cream is the same today as it was in 2014! Ice cream and … [Read more...] about July is National Ice Cream Month!

Holiday Happenings In My Retirement Kitchen

Christmas Cookies

All too soon the holidays were upon me this year. So much to do, so little time! With all the craziness of working on the renovations for our new house, the focus was on getting my retirement kitchen up and running in time for Thanksgiving, Hanukkah and Christmas. The kids were coming home and the annual holiday cookie baking had to get done.  It was time to get ready for our … [Read more...] about Holiday Happenings In My Retirement Kitchen

Thanksgiving – Our Shared Connection to the Past

Historic Plymouth Plantation in Plymouth, MA

There seems to be a general consensus that Thanksgiving is the best of all the holidays.  What’s not to love about a holiday where friends and family take time to gather around the table, share a traditional meal, and give thanks for all we have?  It’s a celebration across the generations and one holiday where we all have a shared connection to the past.  Central to our … [Read more...] about Thanksgiving – Our Shared Connection to the Past

Inflation Melts Away Retirement Savings like Ice Cream on a Summer Day!

Melting ice cream symbolic of results of inflation on retirement savings

I have always loved having a summer birthday, and this year my birthday fell on “National Ice Cream Day.”  How lucky was that!  In fact, all of July is “National Ice Cream Month.”  This is such wonderful news from a self-proclaimed ice cream aficionado.  And, really, who doesn’t love ice cream?  But, it's also a reminder that inflation melts away retirement savings.  And, … [Read more...] about Inflation Melts Away Retirement Savings like Ice Cream on a Summer Day!

Budgeting for Retirement: Backyard BBQs and Back-of-the-Envelope Budgets

Retirement budget on envelope

Another challenging winter in New England. And winter blues across most of the country. Since groundhog day, we held onto hope that the cold and snow and ice would give way to spring.  While hunkered down at home, we could have been budgeting for retirement and dreaming of those future days. But, if you're like most, you spent time watching TV after shoveling snow. But, … [Read more...] about Budgeting for Retirement: Backyard BBQs and Back-of-the-Envelope Budgets

What’s Cookin’?

If your kitchen is anything like mine, it’s the place everyone gathers to talk about their day, share special moments, and ask important questions. And to see what’s cooking.

There’s a strong connection between preparing meals and planning retirement. Both need certain ingredients, recipes to follow, and timing that’s just right.

My motto to live by: "If you can make a lasagna, you can create a retirement plan."

In the "Marcia’s Retirement Kitchen" section, you’ll find fun ways to think about your retirement and get some of my favorite recipes. Just for fun!
