Boomers in Action

February 5, 2018 by Marcia Mantell

Baby Boomers are doing some of the most interesting things as they look forward to or live in retirement. They are approaching the whole idea of “retirement” with reckless abandon!  Meaning, they are abandoning traditional ideas about what a retiree can or should do. They have become boomers in action. Boomers embrace every aspect of modern day life. And they are making … [Read more...] about Boomers in Action

The Heart of Retirement Lies in Freedom

January 31, 2025 by Marcia Mantell

Cute picture with two hearts and words Happy Retirement as symbol for the heart of retirement

This phrase sums up what retirement should be for every Boomer and GenXer: The heart of retirement lies in freedom. The freedom to pursue passions, reinvent oneself, and live authentically. A philosophy we might all aspire to. And a goal that’s not so easy to achieve. These words of wisdom come from my long-time colleague, David Conti. He is tackling this retirement thing … [Read more...] about The Heart of Retirement Lies in Freedom

Our Next 10 Adventure: An Update and An Extension

June 28, 2024 by Marcia Mantell

Road sign that says the next 10

Hard to believe we’re now eight years into our “Next 10 Adventure.” This was our idea of how to change things up after the kids were gone. We had been in the same town and the same house for 25 years when we had a conversation. Would we be willing to move to somewhere new before retirement? Much to both our surprises, we were okay leaving the house where we raised our kids. … [Read more...] about Our Next 10 Adventure: An Update and An Extension

Asking Retirees to Do the Impossible

July 25, 2023 by Marcia Mantell

circle with "Mission Impossible" in the middle representing how we're asking retirees to do the impossible

Remain calm, cool, and collected during times of great investment uncertainty and political drama (Part 2) All the while we’ve been saving for retirement, we’ve been exposed to financial risks. Everything from market volatility to inflation. From not saving enough to spending too much. And sometimes, unexpected and unwelcome life events that affect our financial picture. … [Read more...] about Asking Retirees to Do the Impossible

Asking Retirees to Do the Impossible

Do the impossible graphic

Remain calm, cool, and collected during times of great economic uncertainty and personal unknowns (Part 1) Back on Aug 19, 2019, we started hearing the “R” word come out of hibernation. And it wasn’t “retirement.” At that time most economists believed the United States would tip into recession by 2021. Now, four years later, we continue to hear we’re moving into a … [Read more...] about Asking Retirees to Do the Impossible

“It’s My Time to Retire!”

January 23, 2023 by Marcia Mantell

birthday card when it's time to retire. Copy reads: Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a well-preserved body, rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, wine in the other, body thoroughly worn out and screaming whoo-hoo! What a ride!

“And I’m going to love it!” You know it’s going to be a fun interview when your guest starts off with, “It’s 18 days till retirement! Or, it could be more… Or maybe not…” Well, just what does that mean? I asked Kim, a younger baby boomer born in 1959, to further explain. She expanded her comment, “I know it’s my time to retire, but my boss doesn’t yet have a replacement … [Read more...] about “It’s My Time to Retire!”

Marcia's Retirement Kitchen

What’s Cookin’?

If your kitchen is anything like mine, it’s the place everyone gathers to talk about their day, share special moments, and ask important questions. And to see what’s cooking.

For me, there is a strong connection between preparing meals and planning retirement. Both need certain ingredients, recipes to follow, and getting the timing just right.

My motto to live by: If you can make a lasagna, you can create a plan for retirement.

Look for an invitation to join me at my kitchen table where retirement is always on the menu.

More coming soon…
