How Boomers Are Reshaping and Redefining "Retirement"

Boomers in Action

February 5, 2018 by Marcia Mantell

Baby Boomers are doing some of the most interesting things as they look forward to or live in retirement. They are approaching the whole idea of “retirement” with reckless abandon!  Meaning, they are abandoning traditional ideas about what a retiree can or should do. They have become boomers in action.

Boomers embrace every aspect of modern day life. And they are making fascinating decisions about what retirement will be.

Overall, they either love retirement or go back to work.  Most boomers report active involvement in their communities or by exploring the world.  Or both. Many tend their gardens, watch their grandchildren, and become photographers.

Every door is open.  No idea is too small. Furthermore, you’ll get to define your own garden of variety in retirement. But where to start?

Boomers are everywhere, changing the world

In March 2011, I started this blog. I was looking for a creative outlet and a way to share just how different Boomers were rethinking retirement. Now, it’s 2026 and this section of the blog is chock-full of great stories from boomers in action.

In equal measure some of their stories are inspirational while others are grounded in peace. Some are crazy busy volunteering in important ways. Others are basking in the glory of having worked hard for 40+ years and can now take it easy to explore.

What I hope you will find in these annals are ideas for how you might approach the 30-years of extra time you are likely to have in retirement. It is truly a gift to have these years of wisdom to mold into our own.

Meet some amazing boomers in action

Overall, Boomers are embracing the freedoms that come with retirement.

What’s Cookin’?

If your kitchen is anything like mine, it’s the place everyone gathers to talk about their day, share special moments, and ask important questions. And to see what’s cooking.

There’s a strong connection between preparing meals and planning retirement. Both need certain ingredients, recipes to follow, and timing that’s just right.

My motto to live by: "If you can make a lasagna, you can create a retirement plan."

In the "Marcia’s Retirement Kitchen" section, you’ll find fun ways to think about your retirement and get some of my favorite recipes. Just for fun!
